Foster

Foster carers are the lifeblood of Pawfect Pals; without them we would cease to exist. We are always in need of more foster carers who can commit to helping save dogs from an uncertain future.

If you have the time, space and motivation to foster medium to large dogs, submit an application to foster for Pawfect Pals!

Fostering is not always a walk in the park. Saying goodbye is never easy, but knowing you changed the life of one creature for the better makes it all worthwhile. Each foster takes a piece of your heart with them, but there’s always another to fill the gap.

Foster FAQs

  • Our foster carers have full control over which dogs they foster. You will never be pressured into taking a dog. We recommend choosing a foster that will suit your lifestyle, home and level of experience.

  • We generally rescue medium to large breed dogs, like Kelpies, Australian Cattle Dogs, Border Collies, Wolfhounds, Bull Arabs and other large mixed breeds. We do not rescue small breed dogs.

  • The length of time a dog is in foster care varies, but the majority of our dogs are adopted within 3-6weeks of arriving in care. You will need to be able to commit to caring for the dog until it is adopted. Should you be unable to care for your foster dog anymore, we will move him/her to another carer.

  • Most dogs that come in to care need to learn the basics (i.e. sit, leash manners, not to jump, on your bed/mat). Some will already have these skills, others will need further rehabilitative training and behaviour modification. This can be discussed with the Foster Care Coordinator.

  • We do not require you to have your foster dog inside.

  • We don’t have specific requirements for feeding your foster dog. When possible, we will provide you with dry food for your dog.

  • Yes, you will need to be able to transport your foster dog to vet appointments as needed. We have a number of vets throughout Melbourne and Victoria, so there is usually one within 30 minutes of each carer’s home.

  • We have a dedicated Foster Care Coordinator who will help you every step of the way on your fostering journey. We have also built a supportive community of animal lovers who go out of their way to help a dog in need or a fellow volunteer. We love welcoming new carers to Team PPAR, and are always available to guide you in any way possible.

  • Absolutely not! If you already have pets, you will need to consider if they will handle new dogs coming in to their property. This can be very stressful for some pets. Others enjoy the company a foster dog brings. It is also a good idea to have a plan in case the animals need to be separated i.e. separate yard, crate etc.

  • Yes you can foster if you have children. Kids usually love fostering! Of course, children and pets should never be left unsupervised and you should always exercise caution when introducing a new dog to your children.

  • Yes, we arrange a local volunteer to visit your property to check your fences are secure, you have adequate shelter for a dog and there are no hazards which may cause harm to a dog. It also gives you the chance to ask any questions about fostering.

  • We do our best to cover all costs related to your foster dog. Pawfect Pals covers all vet costs including flea and worming treatments, and can supply bedding, crates, collars, leads and toys if required. We will supply food for your foster dog if we have donations available.
